Abstract

Field experiment with rice was conducted at IRRI during 1989 wet season. The experimental design was a two?factor randomized complete block with 12 treatments and four replications. Fertilizer N was applied at 60 kg N/ha as 2/3 basal incorporated (B&I) + 1/3 N topdressed at 5-7 days before panicle initiation (DBPI) except for pure green manure treatments where the full N dose as Sesbania rostrala (Sesbania) orAeschynomene afraspera (Aeschynomene) was basally incorporated. Root length density was determined at the flowering and plant nutrient uptake was determined separately by calculating from the product of dry matter, straw dry weight, grain yield and % N, P, K content. Results showed that root growth of broadcast seeded flooded rice (BSFR) was higher at all soil depth than transplanted rice (TPR) as per unit area due to higher plant density and root growth was not disturbed by uprooting. However, on a per tiller basis, root length was significantly lower in BSFR than in TPR at 0-10 cm soil depth which could have partly caused more lodging in BSFR. There were no significant differences among N treatments and no interaction between planting method and N treatment on root growth. However, nonfertilized control gave signifi?cantly higher root-to-shoot ratio than did N-treated plots. Total N uptake in BSFR was higher than that in TPR. Topdressing urea in PU-green manure treatments resulted in higherN uptake at maturity than did green manure applied alone. Phosphorus and K uptake were not significantly differ among the fertilized treatments in both TPR and BSFR at 5-7 DBPI.

Abstract

Rubber seedlings from two early-introduced clones (EIRpsu 1 and EIRpsu 2) in southern Thailand were evaluated for root growth performance under field conditions. The two clones had been screened for white root disease tolerance. Genetic analysis of EIRpsu 1 and EIRpsu 2 was compared to RRIM 600 (the major cultivated variety of Hevea rubber in Thailand) using random amplified polymorphic DNA markers with 10 primers. Results from cluster analysis indicated that EIRpsu 2 was closer to RRIM 600 than EIRpsu 1 with similarity coefficients of 0.850, 0.860 and 0.890, respectively. Root growth of EIRpsu1 and EIRpsu2 was monitored at a rubber plantation in Langsuan district, Chumphon province during 2012–2013. Six-month-old seedlings of each clone were transplanted into a rhizobox. The experiment was designed as a randomized complete block design with four replications, with one plant per rhizobox. Shoot growth and root proliferation of the seedlings were recorded at two-monthly intervals from October 2012 to March 2013. The shoot growth was monitored by measuring plant height, trunk diameter and the number of compound leaves. It was found that RRIM 600 exhibited the highest shoot growth under field conditions, and it was significantly different from the other two clones. The root length density was measured by scanning the root systems of each seedling from a panel in the rhizobox. Results showed that the seedlings of EIRpsu 1 and EIRpsu 2 had better root growth than RRIM 600. The spatial distribution of roots indicated a rather deeper root system for the two selected clones.

Abstract

Gibberellic acid (GA subscript 3), boric acid (H subscript 2 BO subscript 3), zince sulfate (ZnSO subscript 4) and potassium nitrate (KNO subscript 3) was applied during the imbibition stage of germination process. It was found that 50 ppm GA subscript 3 could not improve percentage of seed germination, but it promoted root growth and accumulation dry matter of seedling. The application of 3-9 ppm Boron of H subscript 2 BO subscript 3 or application of 1 and 5 ppm ZnSO subscript 4 could upgrade germination percentage of sweet corn and yard long bean seeds. Furthermore, seedling root length and seedling dry weight were increased by these applications, particularly in low vigour seeds. Application of 5-10 meq.l superscript -1 KNO subscript 3 retarded germination of sweet corn and yard long bean seeds.
